Tar Sands and the South Portland Ordinance

Posted on Aug 19, 2013

Friends of Casco Bay/Casco Baykeeper recognizes that South Portland has become the frontline of a national and international debate on Tar Sands oil. The proposed South Portland ordinance involves the intricacies of municipal law, which is not within the scope of our expertise.

We have had in-depth conversations with attorneys on both sides of the issue. They have provided conflicting interpretations of the possible outcomes from passage of the ordinance. We recognize that we do not have the resources or knowledge to analyze the implications of the ordinance ourselves.

Therefore Friends of Casco Bay/Casco Baykeeper will neither be advocating for nor against passage of the ordinance.

Our advocacy on marine issues is based on scientific fact-based positions. On the issue of Tar Sands, our priorities remain:

  • Ensuring the safe transport of oil, by pipeline, ship or rail
  • Preventing the introduction of invasive species from ballast water
  • Improving port preparedness by ensuring adequate equipment and training to deal with an oil spill as well as updated, approved Contingency Plans
